Annual Japantown Events

San Jose’s Japantown offers the homeowner several events that take place every year:
The San Jose Obon, held in July, is one of the largest Obons in California. Excellent teriyaki chicken, beef, sushi and gyoza are among the highlights. They also offer Gordon Biersch beers and thousands join in to dance the Odori.
Aki Matsuri, or Fall Festival, is held at Wesley United Methodist Church, right in Japantown on 5th near Jackson. The annual event is filled with music and great Japanese food, all prepared by church members. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with the kids. It’s usually the first Saturday in October.

The Jazz Katsu is a fundraiser for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Held at both the Wesley United Methodist Church and Japanese American Museum of San Jose, your ticket buys you two skewers of tender pork katsu and an afternoon of terrific jazz. Here’s a brief vid from one of the rehearsals, led by cool tenor Masaru Koga. The event is usually held in April.
